3 Tips for Denver Tree and Shrub Maintenance

From the beautiful Colorado Blue Spruce to the aromatic Fernbush, caring for your Denver trees and shrubs does not have to be a hassle. While some species can require special care, there are a few things you can do to keep any tree or shrub healthy all year long. If you have been wondering about how to take care of these fantastic plants, check out our three favorite tips below!

Mulch and fertilize in the spring

Regularly mulching and fertilizing your trees and shrubs is a must. However, you may be unsure how and when to do this. For your Denver trees and shrubs, we recommend mulching in mid-to late spring once the soil has warmed. However, if your spring landscaping to-do list is full, you can also consider mulching in early autumn before the first freeze. When mulching your trees and shrubs, be sure to spread the material out thinly (around 3 to 4 inches deep and 4 to 5 feet in diameter) and always leave a 1-to-2-inch gap around the base of the plant. Prior to mulching your tree, you may also want to consider fertilizing it. This is especially true if you feel your tree or shrub is not getting enough nutrients from the soil. For safe and effective tree and shrub fertilizer options, we highly recommend discussing your needs with one of our Growing Green experts.

Water year round

Making sure your trees and shrubs receive enough water is critical to their healthy development. This is especially true in areas with dry climates and lower rainfall amounts, like Colorado. When watering your trees and shrubs, we recommend going slow (about the rate of a gentle trickle) for around 4 to 5 minutes per inch of trunk diameter. We also suggest watering once every two weeks in the fall and spring, once a week during the hot summer months, and once a month in the winter (if snowfall has been minimal and the daily temperature is well above freezing).

Prune properly

Pruning your Denver trees and shrubs is an easy way to remove dead, dying, and diseased portions of these plants. By removing these problem areas regularly, you can help ensure your tree or shrub is receiving all the light, air, and nutrients it needs to thrive. Prior to pruning, we recommend first researching the specific needs of your tree or shrub species (as they often vary). If this leaves you feeling unsure or in need of assistance, we suggest contacting a professional tree and shrub service, like the team at Growing Green. Contacting a professional team can help determine and solve your pruning problems, while also saving your tree or shrub from unnecessary damage.
